You cannot use the Microsoft filecoverter to open dotx files.
First you must convert the dotx file to a docx file then you'll easily be able to open it with the Microsoft File converter.
There's a free dotx to docx converter here that works brilliantly:

Cheers!

Your answer applies to docx files not dotx. The Compatibility Pack does not work for these template files.

It's wrong... the compatibility pack does not work for dotx! Just check it's all over the net!

Shame it doesn't list the files it actually works for!
I have installed the compatibility tool on 2 x PCs.
I cannot open a dotx file in Word 2003 nor Word 2007.
This is the usual Microsoft change for the sake of change driven by pointy-heads. File format compatibility should be mandatory through subsequent releases of the same software - not doing so is shameful but gives MS a nice little earner huh
Already wasted 2 hours and still cannot find a way to open a document needed urgently. I only bought a PC; I didn't want a hobby!

Compatibility pack works with DOCX and DOCM. It specifically does NOT work with doTx. Check the original notes:
